Baroque Music Festival News – Opera Premiere Dido & Aeneas

The San Miguel Baroque Music Festival is reaching a new high with a daring production of Baroque opera
made possible by the collaboration with several world class music institutions:
the Grammy nominated Ars Lyrica of Houston, the Camerata Ventapane,
the Opera de Monterrey, and the Baroque coral group Capilla Virreinal

De La Nueva España. Together they are presenting a fully staged production
of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Obraje Cultural
Center
on March 19, 2011.

Ars Lyrica and the Camerata
Ventapane
bring to this masterpiece of English opera their unique mix of
old music and new media— with a full Baroque orchestra performing on period
instruments, conducted by Matthew Dirst. Mr. Dirst leads an
international ensemble of top musicians as well as a cast of some of the finest
young baroque singers including a member of the 4-time Grammy nominated Conspirare
voices Melissa Givens as Dido, Michael Kelly as Aeneas, bring
new dimensions to Purcell’s brilliant score.

This innovative production is sure to interest opera lovers, art fans, and San Miguel visitors
alike and is part of an exciting new direction for the festival, combining
Baroque music with other art forms, creating a cultural experience that excites
and entertains.
